Whether installing a new floor at home or in a commercial building, rubber flooring rolls provide an economical and resilient flooring option. Greatmats offers rubber rolls in numerous thicknesses and color options.

Characteristics of Rubber Flooring Rolls

All of our rubber rolls feature similar characteristics, designed to provide the best overall results in terms of durability and quality.

    • Recycled materials: All of our rubber mat rolls make use of recycled rubber materials, which provides high quality flooring and which helps the environment.
    • Non-slip: Our flooring rolls contain a non-slip surface that works great for athletics, preventing slippage from users.
    • Durability: The surface of the Greatmats rubber flooring offers durability, resisting scuffs and dents from heavy objects.
    • Water resistant: The rolled flooring resists spills from water and other liquids. However, if exposed to water consistently, over time, the floor will absorb water.
    • Odor resistant: Because of its water resistance, the rubber mat rolls won’t absorb sweat, allowing it to remain resistant to odors. The construction process we use generates a limited amount of rubber odor when the product is new too.
    • Long lasting color: Should you choose to add flecks of color in your rubber flooring, it lasts through years of usage, as the flecks are incorporated throughout the thickness of the floor. This means the color won’t wear away as it would if it were just on the surface.
    • Made in America: We’re proud of the fact that all of our Greatmats rubber rolls are made in the USA.

Rolled mat roll specified cut lengths are available upon request. In some cases, some manufacturers may provide the length within two rolls. For example, a 45 linear foot run lay consist on two pieces, one at 20 and one at 25 linear feet. Butt seams are common in a rolled rubber flooring layout.

Use Cases for Rubber Rolled Flooring

If you are looking to install flooring in an area used for athletics and training, rolled rubber is a great product. It protects floors from dents from free weights and exercise equipment, such as treadmills, offering strong durability.

It’s important to note that our rubber mat roll consists of a hard rubber that’s similar in consistency and feel to a car tire. This provides the durability levels found in our products. However, most of this type of flooring offers very little cushioning and isn’t considered a fatigue relief flooring product.

Our flooring fits well for a variety of use cases because of the numerous sizes we offer. When ordering from Greatmats, our rubber rolls appears in 4 foot widths with standard cut lengths of 10, 25 and 50 linear feet. We also provide custom cut lengths. Thickness options include 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch and 8 mm (approximately 5/16 inch).

Our thickness measurements on the rubber gym flooring rolls have a tolerance of plus or minus 0.02 inches. The width measurements on each roll have a tolerance of plus or minus 1/4 inch.

Color Options for Rolled Rubber Flooring

To provide different color styles in our rubber gym flooring rolls, we add color flecks to the rubber flooring’s black base. Because the flecks are inserted throughout the thickness of the flooring, you won’t see the color flecks wear away over time. The flooring maintains its color as it ages.

The Greatmats rubber flooring rolls are available in standard 100 percent black or a base black with color fleck options at 10 or 20 percent saturation. For custom options, you can pick color flecks up to 90 percent saturation. You can see examples of the various color flecks on our website. If you choose a custom color flooring, minimum orders are required, depending on the thickness of the flooring.

Natural rolled rubber contain whitewalls from recycled tires in the rubber mix. The confetti color option includes colored materials of varying types of rubber from previous runs. These color mixes vary slightly among each of the rubber mat rolls.

Installation of Rubber Rolls

As long as you’re installing our rubber flooring rolls over a hard floor, these rolls are relatively easy to install, although having at least two people available to help with installation works better than one person working alone.

You’ll lay the rubber mat roll directly over concrete, ceramic tile, a low pile carpet or any smooth, hard, flat surface. For a wall to wall installation, simply unroll the rubber mat and cut to fit with a straightedge and a utility knife. Our rolled rubber products are factory cut with precision at the widths of the rolls, meaning they will lay side by side with no gaps between rolls. However, the ends of the rolls are not cut square and will require trimming during installation.

To adhere the rubber mat roll to the floor, you may use either double sided tape or adhesive. You also may dry lay rubber rolls, but they should be taped at the perimeter and seams to keep them from overlapping or sliding.

Here are some tips for installation, depending on the size of the room.

Small areas: For installations of rubber mat rolls in small homes or small rooms, you may not need to adhere the rubber flooring rolls to the floor, especially if furniture or exercise machines are atop the rolls, holding them in place. Still, we’d recommend using two-sided tape at the edges of each roll.

Medium sized areas: For medium-sized areas of less than 1,000 square feet, a double-sided carpet tape often provides enough adhesive to keep the rolls in place. However, some people prefer to use glue in this type of installation for a more permanent installation.

Large areas: For installations over 1,000 square feet, we always recommend a full glue down installation, especially where climate conditions may change. When gluing down the material, use a full spread glue method, covering the entire floor surface with glue where rubber will be laid.

During installation, pick an area where these rubber mat rolls will not be subject to constant dampness. Although non-porous, this rubber material will absorb water over time when submerged repeatedly or when power washed on a regular basis.

Should this rubber material become excessively wet, it is best to elevate the material off the ground for air drying or hand drying.

Please Note: Cut lengths for rubber mat rolls are provided as a courtesy at no additional cost to customers. In come cases, the manufacturer may provide a cut length within two pieces of material. In other cases, the manufacturer may send material that is over or under the specified linear footage. In all cases, the manufacturer is required to supply the overall amount of material per order. It is common for rolled rubber jobs to have butt seams or cut end seams within one roll or run.

Franklin County Sandlot Football Makes Most of Rubber Flooring

Youth Football Program Makes the Most of New Greatmats Rubber Flooring Rolls

By Brett Hart

The 11-year-old Franklin County Sandlot Football program recently installed approximately 2,200 square feet of of 1/4 inch thick rolled rubber flooring in its multipurpose space in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

Basement Football equipment and meeting room Greatmats rubber flooring

The program which hosts approximately 150 participants, ages 7 through 12 years old, each year needed a floor that would be able to be installed over concrete and withstand a fair amount of traffic. The basement space, which houses all of the programs equipment, is used regularly June through November for things such as equipment handouts, team, parent & board meetings, watching film and even light practices during adverse weather conditions.

Program Coordinator Jamie Tuck had a good idea of where to start the search for quality flooring that would meet the needs and survive the demands of this challenging environment. The father of six and husband to a small daycare operator, Tuck had equipped his entire basement seven years earlier with a durable foam flooring from Greatmats.com that had held up to 6-10 children riding bikes and playing in his basement daily.

”They have held up well,” his wife, and Franklin County Sandlot Secretary, Shelly, said.

So when the football program needed to replace the carpeting in its basement multipurpose space, the Tuck’s, impressed by Greatmats quality products and service, went straight its website to see what options were available.

”After reviewing a few different options, we felt that the rolled rubber flooring would be just what we needed,” Shelly said.

As owners of a construction business the Tuck family knows what kind of abuse flooring can undergo. Also a big football family, the Tucks’ oldest son is a member of one of the teams while Jamie coaches two Sandlot teams.

”We truly love the many different things that the flooring can stand up to,” Shelly said. ”The flooring is nice for a meeting, but also durable for a lite practice! We have gotten so many compliments on the new flooring.”

Rio Gran – Indoor Doggy Daycare Play Area

Rubber Flooring at Dog Daycare and Training Facility Rio Gran

By Brett Hart

A love for dogs and an eye for opportunity led Jeff Peters to an exciting journey into the world of canine daycare, boarding and training. A former product and sales manager and director of business development, Peters surprisingly stumbled into the world of doggy daycare a couple of years ago when he and his wife updated their long-term family dog pack with a two much larger, and rowdier, companions.

rio-gran-dogs-play

”As puppies, they were absolute terrors,” Peters said. ”We have a sizable house, but it didn’t matter. It was shoes. It was recliner handles. Everything was getting chewed.”

At their wit’s end, the couple turned to a local doggy daycare facility for help, which Jeff admittedly thought was a bit ”Foo Foo.”

”Doggy daycare?” he said. ”Who would spend money on that?”

Much to his surprise and delight, these two menaces came home well behaved each time they went to daycare. They became much more social with other dogs and humans.

”I saw how happy the dogs were, how happy the clients were, and said, ‘This is a business I want to be in,”’ Jeff said.

Jeff Peters Rio Gran Doggy Daycare Minnesota Greatmats

So when Rio Gran, a reputable multipurpose dog service facility in Hastings, Minn., came up for sale, Jeff jumped on the opportunity to get on board, and ramped things up a notch with a number of upgrades. Jeff purchased the 15-year-old business in September of 2014 and quickly went to work redesigning some of the indoor and outdoor areas of the 3 1/2-acre property for training and play while maintaining the stylish flair of the popular boarding facility.

”It’s all about the creature comfort,” Jeff said. ”We really strive to be doggy heaven.”

Part of the indoor remodeling project involved converting a rundown kennel building into an additional indoor play area. A stickler for safety and cleanliness, Jeff began researching different flooring surfaces to put in the newly-remodeled building.

”We were seriously considering using an epoxy-coated concrete floor,” Jeff said. But after observing the daycare dogs running on different surfaces, he decided that concrete just wasn’t going to cut it.

”We do see quite a few dogs here that have hip issues or even torn ACLs,” Jeff said. ”They have to be very carefully looked after. My fear with concrete was that even if you put a grid in it, it gets slick. If their nails are a little bit long, when they go to make a turn or cut, they can lose their legs out from underneath them.”

Another indoor play area at his facility had a rolled rubber flooring that was about 10 years old and, after some thorough cleaning, still looked like new. Watching the dogs on that surface, he noticed the floor was tacky enough to allow the dogs’ paw pads to grip and keep them from slipping while also being gentle on the pads.

”They will run like crazy on that stuff,” Jeff said. ”If they’re on a hard concrete surface, they run the possibility of tearing up their pads.”

He began researching rubber flooring and found it was even better than he had hoped.

”We were concerned initially about the porosity of the material when dogs have accidents,” Jeff said. ”We get puppies in here a lot at the daycare.”

With a little online research, Jeff found just what he was looking for at Greatmats.com – low odor 3/8-inch thick Greatmats Rubber Flooring Rolls, which are made in the USA from recycled tires.

”It’s a recycled product, but it’s not porous,” Jeff said. ”With… the proper cleaning procedure, you can keep any urine, feces, that sort of thing from getting into the material and staying in the material. I think it’s actually easier to keep clean than concrete.”As for durability, the previously-installed rubber flooring (along with Greatmats’ 5-year limited warranty) gave Jeff the peace of mind he needed to know it is made to last – even with a facility like his that often reaches its 100-dog limit during the summer and holidays.

With the new indoor play area, Rio Gran now offers a little more than 6,000 square feet of indoor roaming area that is covered with this rubber flooring. ”It’s fantastic and it’s easy to keep clean,” Jeff said.

Jeff is also working on upgrading his 16,000 square foot area of off-leash outdoor roaming space.

”Part of what we do is we make sure they get exercise and played with to the point where they want to come back here,” Jeff said. ”Even in the best homes, the dogs aren’t getting necessarily exercised to the point of exhaustion every day. But when they come here, they do. And so they’re very content and always anxious to come back and play.”

Rolled Rubber

Whether you’re looking for a floor covering for a home gym, commercial facility, industrial building, or even an ammunition room, rolled rubber is a great choice.  Excellent for protecting your floor, rolled rubber is tough and relatively inexpensive compared to many other options on the market today.

Rolls of rubber can be used in a variety of different places.  For workout areas where gym equipment or weights are used, rolled rubber protects the floor from damage while also keeping equipment safe from dust and debris.  For most of these situations, we recommend 3/8″.  It is thick enough to protect the floors from day-to-day abuse without being too thick, therefore, and cost prohibitive.  If you are using heavy weights and dropping them to the floor repeatedly (100 lbs or more) we recommend at least a half-inch thickness.  Otherwise, 3/8″ should be more than sufficient to meet your needs.

3/8″ is also the standard thickness for most industrial applications.  Rolled rubber in 3/8″ can be used in high traffic areas, mutions areas, and high traffic walkways in industrial applications.  For everyday walkways, the user can usually go with a 1/4″ rubber product.

Rubber Flooring Rolls can be installed with either a tape-down or glue-down method. Rolled Rubber Flooring can add comfort and durability to an otherwise hard surface. However, it is worth noting that for situations where you will be doing aerobic activity, foam is usually the better product.  It is lighter and less expensive to ship.  It also provides varying degrees of cushion.  (For more information on our foam products, please click here.
Rubber provides more cushion than concrete but it is still hard.  Rubber Flooring Roll material is most commonly ordered in 100 percent black or with a 10 or 20 percent color in the mix.
Rolls of Rubber are the most common types rubber flooring available.  The rolls are heavy and will almost always ship via freight truck but the product itself is generally less expensive than other options such as interlocking tiles.
Each roll of rubber will lay flat when unrolled for installation. Rolled Rubber can be cut with a utility knife for a wall to wall installation. Rubber Roll Floor will withstand high impacts in weight rooms. Rubber Flooring Rolls are all 4 ft wide per roll.  The rolls can easily be cut to fit in a wall-to-wall situation with a sharp utility knife and a straightedge.  Rubber Flooring Roll material is made with recycled rubber content and is considered a green product by EPA standards.  They are manufactured in the USA.

Customer Review-1/4" Rolled Rubber

“Everyone seems very happy with the product and, if needed, we would buy again.”  -Bob J.

At the Azalea Dog Training Club, in Wilmington, NC  www.adtc.us volunteers have been teaching  people how to train their dogs since 1972.   A community-focused organization, they help their neighbors with an entirely volunteer staff.
They deal with puppies as well as adult dogs.  Depending on customer needs, these animals are taught good manners and can even be prepared for competition and obedience trials.  They also do Therapy dog evaluations and certifications and give safety demos to schools and scout troops.  Demos are also given at rest homes or wherever else is needed.
The Azalea center used our 1/4” rolled rubber flooring for their facility.  Not only does the rubber protect the floors below, it offers great traction for the animals as well as the trainers.  At Greatmats, we supply rolled rubber for a wide variety of applications including commercial and home gyms, ammunition rooms, industrial applications, and others.  It is an economical and solution for many situations.
“The installation took approximately six or seven hours, “ Bob says.  “We worked on it for three nights but the third night was strictly putting equipment back in place.  We had about seven or eight people each night…all in all, we are very pleased with the installation.  Our installation was on top of an existing concrete floor.”
Installing rolled rubber can be challenging due to the sheer weight of the product.  However, the rolls are precision cut so they are square against one another.  This provides a tight seam every time.  Interlocking rubber tiles are another option for installing rubber floors in your facility.  Tiles simply piece together like a giant puzzle.  The edges can be cut to fit for a wall-to-wall installation.
Bob says, “I would definitely recommend Greatmats.  I have been told another training facility wants to see our mats.  Paul (a Greatmats sales rep) was an enormous help to us and was very patient with me as I went from him to our club board and membership.  He always had the answers we needed to make our decision.”

Rolled rubber, while heavy is a great and inexpensive way to protect your floors.  We offer a number of different thicknesses and types of rubber.  Natural rubber is made from recycled tires and is the least expensive option.  Black rubber is the most popular rolled rubber we sell.  Color mix rubber is also available in a variety of colors and with varying percentages.  Because the colors mixed in are virgin EPDM rubber fleck, this is the nicest option we carry.

Customer Review-Rolled Rubber

“I am extremely elated and I would most definitely buy from Greatmats again.”

-Don R.
Don chose 3/8” rubber rolls.  He used this rubber flooring to design a fitness center in his basement.  Don attended the National Academy of Sports Medicine to become a personal trainer and it has always been a dream of his to own a fitness center and train clients.

We’ll let him tell his story:

“I wanted the flooring to be durable, flexible, comfortable, and compliment the red and black color scheme of the equipment…I researched some home gym flooring companies online and at brick and mortar…I decided to use Greatmats flooring rolls…the flooring is solid, sturdy, and does not shift when training.”

Rolled rubber is a great option for home gym flooring where weights and exercise equipment is going to be used on a regular basis.  Interlocking rubber tiles are more common for home applications because they’re easier to install and require no adhesives.  This makes the flooring easy to transport if you decide to change locations and want to bring your rubber flooring with you.  However, rolled rubber is less expensive and is often found in commercial applications.   Since Don is using his basement fitness center as a business, it makes sense that he would go this way with the rubber flooring.
Don goes on to say, “when friends, family members, and potential clients visit my fitness room, they say the flooring looks really nice.  One friend who I showed the pictures of the flooring to indicated that it looked professionally done.  The installation went perfectly as explained by Tina (one of our customer service reps).  Thanks, Tina, for your superb advice.  It took 3-4 hours because I wanted it done neatly…the most rewarding part of this project: I saved over $2500 by purchasing the flooring and doing it myself…the website elucidated and depicted the different styles of flooring, percentage of coloring and method of how to request the sample.  I thought it was convenient to get a written quote that included the shipping freight and the total cost…the main reason I purchased my material from Greatmats was because of the superlative customer service, knowledgeable customer service associate, quality products, competitive prices, and concise written quotes.  Moreover, without the rubber flooringmy training room would be incomplete.  I appreciate your company assisting me in achieving my long term goal.”
So, Don, would you recommend Greatmats to your friends?
“Yes, with a favorable endorsement!!!!1”

Thank you, Don.  We’re glad you’re happy with your rubber flooring.  We’re sure you’ll enjoy it for many years to come.

Our rubber flooring products are available in various roll and tile sizes and types.  Be sure to check through your options to determine the product that it best for your unique application.  Do you have questions?  Don’t hesitate to contact one of our customer service representatives and we’ll help you decide the best product for you!

Vulcanization

Rubber is an amazing invention.  It can be used in a number of remarkably different applications because of its versatility.  Natural rubber, for example is extremely elastic.  It can oftentimes be found in products where its unique flexibility is desired like rubber bands or some types of gaskets.  It can also be found in some types of specialty flooring.  However, natural rubber is also brittle when it gets cold and tends to lose shape when warm.  It is for this reason that vulcanization is required for the manufacture of many rubber products.  (Many products such as rubber flooring, tires, and hockey pucks are created from vulcanized rubber.)
The process was initially pioneered by Charles Goodyear (of Goodyear Tire fame.)  He found, accidentally, that rubber tended to char like leather when it came in contact with heat.  He also found that, regardless of the temperature, the rubber would not fully melt but rather continue to char when heated in sulfuric acid.  He was able to char the rubber to the point where it became resistant to heat and cold and found that the process was irreversible.  The rubber would maintain these new properties indefinitely.  This made rubber products such as tires and eventually rubber flooring possible.  Further developments after Goodyear’s initial experimentation eventually led to vulcanization as it is performed today.
Vulcanization is a chemical process that cures rubberor related polymersinto more durable materials by adding various accelerators (which is sulfur in most cases.) These additives change the polymer by forming crosslinks between the individual polymer chains. The process was named after Vulcan, Roman god of fire.  Hard vulcanized rubber is used to make hard rubber articles such as bowling ballsand mouthpieces for band instruments. Vulcanized rubber materials tend to be less sticky and have superior mechanical properties to natural rubber.
There are a variety of methods used for vulcanization. The most important method (used for the vulcanization of tires) uses high pressure and temperature. This type of vulcanization is called compression molding. In this scenario, the rubber article adopts the shape of the mold. Other methods, for instance to make door profiles for cars, use hot air vulcanization or microwave heated vulcanization.
