Times have changed since the days when monkey bars and slides were placed directly over concrete. Broken bones and lawsuits have changed the way schools and parks deal with playgrounds. These days, wood chips and rubber crumb is all the rage for outdoor playground flooring. But are those safety precautions effective?
The short answer is, “no”. Wood mulch and rubber crumb needs to maintain a certain depth to provide fall height safety for kids plummeting from the top of a slide or leaping from a swing. Unfortunately, kids don’t recognize this necessity and wood chips get thrown. Rubber crumb gets moved and shifted under swings and slides. Usually, the places where the need is the greatest are the places where the safety measures fall shortest.
A better solution is outdoor playground tile. Excellent rubber playground tiles for school playgrounds and parks, our Kids Kushion also works great on rooftops or anyplace you need protective surfacing, indoors or out. You can even use Kids Kushion in your warehouse for its anti-fatigue properties.
Kid Kushion rubber playground tiles are 24″ x 24″ and designed to provide constant fall protection while allowing for drainage during inclement weather. They don’t require raking or leveling to ensure that they maintain safe protection for the kids.
To determine which thickness of Kid Kushion playground tiles is suitable for your application, you first determine the “Fall Height” (drop height) of your play area. This sounds more intimidating than it is. If you have playground equipment, measure the height from the ground to the highest platform children stand on. This distance is your Fall Height. Once you have this information, you can select which Kids Kushion playground tile you need.
The 2.5″ thickness is used most frequently in indoor and outdoor settings. When installed over concrete or asphalt, it provides a drop height rating of 6 ft. The 3.5″ thickness is needed for an 8 ft. drop-height over concrete and the 3.75″ thickness is required for a 10 ft. drop-height.
Kids Kushion come in black, blue, charcoal gray, burnt red, and bright green. These four colors (and black) have been carefully selected through various durability and longevity tests. All colored rubber will eventually fade. These colors have been selected because they withstand the effects of UV sunshine the best.
The preferred sub-surface for a Kid Kushion surface is concrete or asphalt but it is ok to install these playground tiles directly on top of compacted dirt or crushed rock. You will need a stable, solid surface with some grade to allow heavy rainfall to drain from the surface area. You do not want water to puddle beneath the tiles for extended periods of time as dips will form over time and the overall appearance of the surface will not be as pleasing.
Because the Kid Kushion Playground Tile system provides a level and resilient surface, it also provides wheelchair accessibility. It features an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliant Ramp (24″x 27″) that has a 1:12 slope. This exceeds the ADA minimum 1:16 grade slope. Transition pieces (ramps) are available in various thicknesses along with corner pieces.
Please note: this material CANNOT be installed directly on top of dirt. It requires a flat, hard surface such as concrete, asphalt, or decking. If you have dirt, a base of crushed stone that is compacted and leveled is required. Our only outdoor product for playgrounds that can be installed directly on grass and dirt is, Kids Ergo Matta.
