Competition gymnastics landing mats are essential equipment for any gymnastics program. Gymnastics landing mats vary in thickness depending on the discipline for which they’re used. It is recommended that mats to be used under bars be at least 8” thick with the width of the mat dependent upon the width of the bars used. At the very least, you want your mats to be at least as wide as the bars. As a rule of thumb, wider is better in case you fall to one side. (For more information on choosing the right competition landing mats, we recommend you check out this site.)
At Greatmats, we carry a variety of different landing mats in two thicknesses: 12 and 20cm. You can choose either non-folding or single-fold competition landing mats available in standard blue. We also provide custom competition landing mats made to your specifications by a leading national manufacturer. All of our competition landing mats
are made in the USA. They are covered with an 18 oz, matted vinyl which is the standard for competition requirements. There is no loose foam in our covers.
All of our landing mats feature a double-stitched top edge and a number 10 YKK molded zipper. They come with 2” polyester web handles so you can easily move them. Hook and loop fasteners come standard on all four sides. These mats are durable and built to last in school gymnastics programs or in professional training.
Please note that NO gymnastics mats
can provide a perfectly risk-free environment for gymnastics training. Gymnastics is a sport that requires discipline and knowledgeable instructors. Equipment needs to be checked and maintained regularly. Excessively dangerous maneuvers or gymnastics moves that are beyond the skill of the gymnast can result in serious injury. As a rule, the more gym mats
the better. It is definitely better to have too many mats in your facility than not enough.

These days, the hottest sport for young kids is gymnastics and the demand for gymnastics instructors and safe gymnastics flooring has never been higher. Successful Olympic athletes like Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas have made the sport’s popularity skyrocket. Today, more children between the ages of 6-12 participate in gymnastics than any other sport and more gymnastics matsare sold now than at any point in history.
Interestingly, gymnastics itself is not new. According to “Nike is a Goddess: The History of Women in Sports,” rhythmic gymnastics was not officially recognized as a sport until 1962 and not considered a part of the Olympic Games until 1984. However, the sport dates back to at least 1904 when some elements of women’s gymnastics debuted at the Olympics. The athletes wore long skirts and high collars and used props, including clubs, canes, wands, ropes, and barbells in their group exercises. Gymnastics mats and octagons as we know them did not exist and athletes took safety risks that would stun today’s parents.
However, because of advanced technology in safety equipment, athletes are able to perform moves that earlier competitors would be awed by. (The leotard would probably cause a few gapes as well.) Learning the complicated gymnastics moves of our day requires dedication and a solid instructor as well as the right safety equipment. Being sure that you have the right gymnastics flooring for the job is critical for today’s instructor.
Our Gymnastics Octagon is a perfect example of equipment that can assist an instructor in teaching the art to young students. It can be used to develop coordination and balance as well as basic moves such as walkovers and handsprings. The octagonal shape keeps the mat from rolling around. This provides stability and builds confidence in athletes who are working on range of motion, flexibility, and balance. They are great for teaching dive rolls as well.
Perfect for cheerleading and gymnastics training, Discount Gym Mats are manufactured to the highest quality of workmanship. They are made of top of the line, cross-linked or PE foam core making them tough enough for professional or home use. These mats are commonly found in high school and university gyms across the country and around the world. Designed for durability and superior shock absorption, these are excellent multi-purpose mats.
Not only can you use these mats for home tumbling and cheerleading practice, they are also great for gymnastics or martial arts studios. Use them at home for pilates or floor exercises. They are lightweight and waterproof so you can bring them with you wherever you need an exercise mat
to spread out for your exercise needs. These mats feature 2-foot panels and fold accordion-style for easy storage and transportation. You can also use these gymnastics mats
as wall padding. Simply screw the external flange on the long side of the mats to a firing strip attached to the wall and you’re done.
All of these discount gymnastics mats have hook and loop fasteners on all 4 sides and come with a thick, industry standard 18 oz vinyl cover. Each discount gym mat
is hand-crafted with double stitched seams. Because they come with fasteners on all four sides, you can create an end-to-end run or build an entire floor by attaching mats at the sides as well as at the ends.

A quick note on safety: Tumbling mats
and protective equipment are not a comprehensive solution for eliminating or reducing all tumbling injuries. Please understand that no mats are fail-safe. There is no substitute for proper instructions, spotting, and common sense when it comes to teaching tumbling or other forms of gymnastics. Landing on the head or in an out-of-control position can result in injuries despite the extra padding provided by mats.
