River City Dance – Sheryl Baker Clogging on Adagio Marley Dance Floor

Standing Up To the Abrasiveness of Appalachian Clogging

By Brett Hart

River City Dance St Croix Falls WI Greatmats Marley Dance FloorDance, and especially clogging, is in the blood for St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin’s River City Dance studio owner Sheryl Baker. Now in her 40s, Sheryl has experience dancing on the stages of Dollywood in Pegeon Forge, Tenn., for six seasons, dancing for two years on the TV show ”The Old Midwest Barn Dance” and coaching several national champion soloists, receiving overall awards and gold medals at the AAU Junior Olympics, NCHC Championships and National Clogging Champions of America.

River City Dance Owner Sheryl Baker St Croix Falls WI GreatmatsGetting her start in figure skating, tap, jazz, ballet, and Appalachian clogging, Sheryl has been a national clogging instructor and judge since 1990. Sheryl was the recipient of the ”Glen Hill Pioneer Award” in 2006, recognizing her for her contributions to the clogging community in choreography, teaching and spirit. In 2013, she was inducted into the clogging ”Hall of Fame.”

In addition to River City Dance, the 30-year veteran of dance instruction also runs the River City Cloggers based on the other side of the Scenic St. Croix River in Taylors Falls, Minn., and a competitive team called The Clogging Premier. She caters to clients ranging from preschool to 92 years young.

river-city-dance9”Appalachian clogging is wonderful for all ages,” Baker said.

Baker’s clogging teams are known for their acapella clogging skills that combine the best tap sounds with rhythm and sound.

”Our team has the national title for the overall acapella team in the world,” Baker said. ”Our clogging nationals teams have won in some of the precision categories, hoedown categories and some of the line categories.”

Her 17-year-old daughter, Alyssa Keller, is also a two-time national champion in acapella clogging.

Finding the Proper Flooring for Clogging

River City Dance Greatmats Marley Dance FloorAs the popularity of Baker’s instruction grew, she decided to open River City Dance earlier this year and needed some quality flooring to meet the needs of this aggressive form of dance as well as other styles.

While searching for dance flooring online, she found Greatmats.com and was impressed by its descriptions of the types of dance flooring available and ultimately chose Rosco Adagio marley flooring.

”I was looking for a floor that was really durable and would stand up to an abrasive type of activity,” Baker said. ”It was very easy to install. It just laid down, and we got it installed very quickly. We opened our studio after two weeks of prepping the space, and it has really held up.”

river-city-dance2She was also impressed with the controlled slip the flooring offered.

”Because (Appalachian clogging) is so aggressive, and you’re picking your feet up so high, it does move very quickly, you’re looking for a floor that has a surface that has non skid. … The dancers risk falling if you’re on a slippery surface.”

”This floor in particular, the marley floor, is wonderful, where we can do our movements and not have fear of falling,” Baker added. ”I always welcome anyone to look up River City Dance. It’s a fun atmosphere.”

River City Dance also offers classes in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Fitness and Canadian Step Dancing.

St. Paul Ballet Leaps Forward With Greatmats Portable Dance Subfloor

Greatmats Portable Dance Subfloor System Improves Traveling Flooring System for Ballet Company

St. Paul Ballet at Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater
After performing on various forms of hard surfaces since it was formed in 1997, the St. Paul Ballet, which travels across Minnesota and Wisconsin to perform several times per year, has been in search of a portable dance subfloor that would ease the stresses on its dancers at an affordable cost.
St Paul Ballet with Greatmats Portable Dance Subfloor

While the dancers are able to practice on marley over a sprung dance floor, that system was too cumbersome for the Artist-Led company to transport for its traveling performances.

Instead, they’ve dealt with performing over hard surfaces, such as brick, cement or wood floors.

”We’ve performed on everything,” said St. Paul Ballet Artistic Director Zoe Emilie Henrot. ”Our Board of Directors and dancers have been looking to create a traveling dance floor for quite some time to help keep the dancers safe while performing while at the same time allowing the dancers to perform in many different types of venues.”

After much research, St. Paul Ballet Board President Dave Trayers decided that Greatmats’ Dance Subfloor system would be the most cost efficient subflooring system – and the easiest subfloor to travel with.

The Greatmats dance subflooring system consists of a layer of 2×2 foot interlocking foam tiles, topped by a layer of 1×1 foot snap together flat top plastic court tiles. The foam layer adds cushioning while the plastic layer offers a firm surface on which to lay a final layer of marley.

After ordering the subfloor, Trayers quickly went to work custom building a cart that would be able to both transport the tiles easily, but also fit neatly in the company’s trailer without wasting critical space.

”(It was) very easy to transport and install using simple carts on wheels,” Henrot said. ”Lightweight enough for anyone to help with the installation.”

That proved to be a good thing. As an artist-led company, the artist not only dance, but are responsible for administrative roles, organizing performances, outreach events, fundraisers, lectures and even installing their own floors.

The St. Paul Ballet was first able to test the flooring on Sept. 16, 2016 when they performed at the historic Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater located in Menomonie, Wisconsin. The 127-year-old theater, named one of the 15 most spectacular theaters in the world by CNN Travel, accommodated a relatively small 26×20 foot dance floor.

St Paul Ballet installing Greatmats Portable Dance Subfloor with Marley Floor

With a team of six working on installation, the subfloor was laid in about a half hour – the same amount of time it took to roll out and tape down the finished marley surface.

”I was very impressed with how little time it took to install the floor,” Henrot said.

After studying dance for more than 20 years and being professional dance for five years, Henrot knew exactly what she was looking for from the flooring system.

”Jumping felt great right away,” she said. ”This system definitely felt MUCH better on the joints when compared to the other floors we have performed on. … Our bodies were not as sore from the shock of landings the next day.”

The one drawback she found, however, was that the floor was ”just a little too soft” to support pointe work. ”It would be excellent as is for modern dance,” she said.

”We are thrilled to be working with Greatmats on the dance floor system,” Henrot said. ”We hope to be able to help design a floor that will protect dancer bodies for year to come!”
